Radiofrequency in beauty - a history behind most demanded technology

Radiofrequency (RF) energy has been used in medical and industrial applications for over a century. However, RF energy used for aesthetic treatments is a more recent development.

⭐️ In the 1920s, researchers began to explore the potential medical applications of RF energy, such as using it to heat tissues for therapeutic purposes.

⭐️ By the 1950s, RF energy was being used in dermatology to treat various skin conditions, such as warts and moles. In the 1980s, RF energy was first used in aesthetic therapy to treat facial wrinkles and skin laxity. The first RF devices used for aesthetic treatments were monopolar, and they were used mainly for skin tightening.

⭐️ In the 1990s, bipolar RF devices were developed, which allowed for more precise and targeted energy delivery. This led to the developing of new treatment applications, such as using bipolar RF for cellulite reduction.
Since then, RF energy has continued to evolve as a popular treatment option in aesthetic medicine, with the development of newer and more advanced devices. Today, RF energy is used for many aesthetic applications, including skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, cellulite reduction, and body contouring.
While the history of RF energy is long and varied, its use in aesthetic medicine is relatively recent. However, as technology advances, new and even more practical applications for RF energy will likely continue to emerge.

Zemits UK offers a wide range of devices with Rf technologies, including multi-application systems, to create combined protocols for more beauty treatments and outstanding results.

How radiofrequency works

RF (Radio Frequency) technology uses electromagnetic waves ranging from 30-300 GHz to heat tissues and stimulates collagen and elastin production. It produces heat by generating electromagnetic energy, which passes through the tissue, creating vibrations at a molecular level. For skin treatments, the heat damages the body's collagen, stimulating a wound-healing response which in turn causes neocollagenesis.

For body-shaping treatments, some manufacturers claim patients can experience apoptosis of the fat cells. In difference, others say that they help to melt the fat by making the cell membrane more permeable so that fatty acids and lipids can be passed via the lymphatic system. Subdermal temperatures from 65°C to 68°C and skin surface temperatures ranging from 38°C to 42°C are required to obtain optimal contraction.

RF technology has been used for many years in various medical applications, including cancer treatment and cardiology, and more recently in the beauty industry as a non-invasive beauty treatment for skin tightening and rejuvenation.

Radiofrequency evolution

The development of RF technology has revolutionised the cosmetic industry by offering patients an alternative to surgical procedures with minimal contraindications, no downtime, and side effects. With ongoing research and technological advancements, RF treatments are likely to become even more effective and versatile in the future.

When it comes to aesthetic medicine, the first method of delivering RF into the skin was brought into the spotlight in the early 2000s for concerns such as laxity, wrinkle reduction, acne and skin tightening, and several techniques of delivery have now been developed, including monopolar, bipolar, multipolar and fractional. In addition, RF technology can be used on all skin types.
The first type of RF device used in aesthetics was delivered through a monopolar handpiece for facial wrinkle reduction. Monopolar devices deliver energy through one singular active electrode, flowing from the device to a grounding pad placed on the treatment area.

Even though Monopolar technology has been shown to be effective in treating skin laxity, some patients experienced high pain levels when undergoing the treatment. Other side effects identified in the study were persistent erythema, headache, scarring, and oedema.

In 2004, monopolar RF was approved for use on the full-face. RF body contouring devices can be monopolar, but a limitation has been identified due to small applicators treating large areas, such as the abdomen. While this may work for smaller areas such as the eyelids, it can be impractical from a time standpoint to use it for these large areas.

Bipolar RF

Bipolar RF devices for aesthetic treatments are designed to deliver energy while focusing on optimising comfort and minimising downtime, as mentioned above. Although it treats the same concerns, bipolar differs from monopolar because the current is transferred between two different positioned electrodes in the handpiece instead of just one, meaning practitioners can distance the poles to control their target area. Less current is required with a bipolar device than with a monopolar device to achieve the same result because the current passes through a smaller volume of tissue.

A challenge that has been identified with bipolar RF is that the practitioner can only treat one depth of skin or subcutaneous fat at a time. So, different handpieces are generally required for face and body treatments.
Zemits Klein RF 2.0 Skin Tightening System is the latest bipolar RF technology for precise facial and neck treatments. With Zemits Klein RF 2.0, it is possible to deliver RF energy to the deeper dermal layers of the skin without harming the epidermis.
With the new device, you will have two handpieces included:
  • The smaller bipolar RF handpiece has a flat surface and circular electrodes, perfect for treating the skin around the eyes and lips.
  • The bigger four-polar RF handpiece also has a flat surface for safe and comfortable skin-tightening facials.
Zemits Klein RF 2.0 is a unique device to deliver RF energy to the skin's deeper dermal layers for more excellent results.

Multipolar

Multipolar RF technology was built on bipolar technology again for skin laxity and tightening. This refers to a device with three or more electrodes, where the negative and positive poles rotate around the different electrodes. In this way, very uniform bulk heating can be achieved while maintaining low epidermal temperatures.

Multipolar RF is commonly used for skin tightening and wrinkle reduction and for treating cellulite and other body contouring concerns. It is generally considered a safe and effective treatment option, and the number of treatments required can vary depending on the individual's needs and the area being treated.

The all-new and unique Zemits Abigon Pro introduces the combination of bipolar and multipolar RF to targeted areas of the most concern with several benefits. It is an excellent body sculpturing system for slimming and skin tightening.

The Abigon Pro provides effective and safe fat reduction, body sculpting and skin-firming treatment for your clients. Benefits are:
  • Skin tightening of inner thighs, hips, knees, abdomen, love handles, arms
  • Facial rejuvenation treatments
  • Stretch marks reduction
  • Bipolar handpieces are designed for work on the face and eye, allowing estheticians to use them efficiently for targeted areas.

No-needle Fractional RF

No-needle fractional RF (radiofrequency) is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to heat and remodel the skin. Unlike traditional fractional RF treatments that use needles to deliver the RF energy into the skin, no-needle fractional RF uses a specialised handpiece that emits the RF energy through a series of nano-electrodes that do not penetrate the skin.

The nano-electrodes create tiny channels in the skin, allowing the RF energy to penetrate deeper and more evenly into the skin tissue. In addition, the heat generated by the RF energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which helps improve the skin's texture and tone.

The cutting-edge fractional Rf technology of the Zemits CrystalFrax represents the exemplar of an effective, long-lasting and comfortable skin-tightening device for all skin types.
The Zemits Fractional RF is successfully used to treat ageing skin. This skin condition is characterised by decreasing skin elasticity and, as a result, the thinning of the epidermal and dermal skin layers; these skin changes result in fine lines, wrinkles, tone and skin texture issues.
Deep stimulating nano-electrodes fractional RF treatment provides controlled dermal damage and boosts further neocollagenesis.

The main benefit of Zemits CrystalFrax is technology allows deep skin rejuvenation without impacting the entire skin's surface because the multiple smooth RF pins cause thermal stress to the dermis in microscopic targeted zones. The intact surrounding tissue helps to increase the skin recovery process. The treatment helps to strengthen, tighten and plump the skin, resulting in an overall rejuvenated appearance.

Compared to traditional bipolar RF technology, Zemits CrystalFrax delivers Rf energy in pulsating and continuous modes in a more precise section of the skin for better results within a much shorter treatment session.

  • Treatment is painless with no downtime and few contradictions.
  • Short treatment sessions for more appointments and profit
  • Compact size for a small treatment room and is excellent for the mobile therapist.
Having been around for more than 20 years in the aesthetic sphere, RF has evolved into several devices looking to provide clients with long-lasting results while balancing downtime and safety.
RF technology can be used on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. The treatment typically involves a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve the desired results.
