Every aesthetic practitioner knows that the biggest enemies of skin health are sun exposure and oiliness. Still, paying attention to these perils can be easy, eventually leading to skin damage and unsatisfactory conditions.

Oil blocks the sebaceous glands, creating the potential for acne and rosacea and ideal conditions for bacterial growth. Sun exposure causes most facial wrinkles and age spots, which patients often consider 'typical ageing'. Over time, ultraviolet light damages the elastin fibres in the skin. The top sublayer of the epidermis is the stratum corneum. The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin and provides the first barrier of protection from the invasion of substances into the body. The epidermis is an elastic layer on the outside that is continually being regenerated. It includes the following:

⭐️ Keratinocytes - the primary cells of the epidermis formed by cell division at its base. New cells continually move towards the surface. As they move, they gradually die and become flattened.

⭐️ Corneocytes - the flattened dead keratinocytes that together make up the very outer layer of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum or horny layer. This protective layer is continually worn away or shed.

⭐️ Melanocytes – produce the pigment melanin that protects against UV radiation and gives skin its colour.

The skin has a number of lines of defence against penetration of foreign objects and substances, essentially rendering the skin resistant to absorption of substances the body considers alien.

It is in the lower layers that the most cellular activity occurs. Most common tone related skin problems that bring client to aestheticians are skin conditions that alter the colour of skin. As with skin texture, internal and external factors control the colour of the skin.

• Epidermal. Pigmentation plays a major role in the colour of the skin, and conditions related to the abnormal production of melanin (hyper-pigmentation and
  hypo-pigmentation) are not uncommon.

By understanding melanogenesis and its synergy with the keratinocyte, you can ascertain the cause of pigmented skin conditions and implement an effective

• Dermal. Microcirculation plays a considerable role in the overall colour of the skin, with the general condition and health of the skin reflected in that colour. The lymphatic and circulatory systems regulate the hydration of these lower levels. These systems work in synergy to preserve fluid and nutritional balance and
are a major part of the skin defence function.
